For companies running targeted internet marketing and advertising campaigns, it is important to keep an eye on how the leaders of your industry are handling their social media presences.
A market research consulting firm, Market Strategies, has created a report called a Social Media Brand Index. This index measures the companies with the most successful social media campaigns.
"Companies are swimming in web analytics, but they often have no idea where they are in relation to other swimmers," Theo Downes-Le Guin, a consultant for Market Strategies and its former chief research officer, said in a statement. "Our Index rank orders nearly 150 leading brands across industries as well as the most social brands by industry."
The winner of report was Starbucks, the Seattle-based high-end coffee shop that is now a worldwide franchise. Following Starbucks was Amazon, Walt Disney, Canon and Google.
According to the study's results, there were several elements of a successful social media branding strategy that nearly all of these companies exhibited. First, they are diverse in their social media presence, meaning that these companies use various platforms at different levels instead of focusing in on one. In addition, these businesses understand that there is a "right" level of social presence from industry to industry.
For example, a clothing company can provide fashion tips and deals to its audience very often and they will appreciate the content, but a financial services company really doesn't need to be posting content as frequently.
