Search engine optimization (SEO), which consists of integrating a series of keywords into your online content, is one of the most effective ways that brands can drive traffic to their websites. However, it's a constantly evolving technology that won't work if it's not implemented correctly.
Fortunately, Matt Cutts, who describes himself as "head of webspam" at Google, recently revealed some of the most common mistakes that people make when they're getting started with SEO. Let's take a look at a few of them:
Failing to include good titles and descriptions – These bits of copy are a big part of what draws people to your website, so it's important to make sure they aren't left blank.
Using the wrong keywords – It's important to select phrases that people are apt to search for. If you're writing a page about dogs, for example, instead of including keyword phrases like "greyhound appearance," opt for something more conversational like "how big are greyhounds."
Valuing link-building over quality content – Rather than focusing too much of your attention on links, Cutts says, "I would try to think instead about what I can do to market my website to make it more well known within my community, or more broadly, without only thinking about search engines."
